The Cortisol Connection: How Chronic Stress Is Quietly Driving Inflammation, Weight Gain, and Exhaustion

by Susanne  - August 26, 2026

There is a hormone that most people have heard of but very few truly understand — and it may be doing more damage to your health right now than almost anything else in your daily life.

That hormone is cortisol. And in the world we live in today — with its relentless pace, constant demands, poor sleep, and processed food — most of us are producing far too much of it, far too often.

The result is a cascade of effects that show up in ways we rarely connect back to stress: stubborn belly fat that won’t respond to diet or exercise, chronic fatigue that sleep doesn’t fix, inflammation that drives premature aging, blood sugar that swings unpredictably throughout the day, and a nervous system that never quite comes down from high alert.

I know this loop intimately — not just as a health coach, but from my own experience. There was a time when I was caught in the cortisol stress cycle myself, running on adrenaline and wondering why I couldn’t feel better despite doing so many things right. Learning to understand and manage cortisol — through the way I eat, the supplements I take, and staying consistently active — has been genuinely life changing. The difference in how I feel is something I can’t overstate. And sharing that understanding with the people I work with is one of the most meaningful and motivating parts of my coaching practice.

What Is Cortisol and What Is It Supposed to Do?

Cortisol is your primary stress hormone, produced by the adrenal glands in response to perceived threat or demand. In the short term it is not only normal but essential — it sharpens focus, mobilizes energy, and prepares the body to respond to challenge. This is the famous fight-or-flight response, and it is a brilliantly designed survival mechanism.

The problem is that this system was designed for acute, short-lived stressors — a physical threat that passes quickly and allows the body to return to baseline. It was not designed for the chronic, low-grade, relentless stress of modern life. Deadlines, financial pressure, relationship tension, poor sleep, inflammatory food, sedentary days, and the constant stimulation of screens — all of these trigger cortisol production. And when cortisol stays elevated day after day, the body never gets the signal that it is safe to stand down.

Chronic elevated cortisol is one of the most underrecognized drivers of poor health in the modern world. And most people have no idea it is happening to them.

The Cortisol-Belly Fat Connection

One of the most frustrating and least understood effects of chronic cortisol elevation is its impact on body composition — specifically the accumulation of visceral fat around the midsection.

Here is what happens: cortisol signals the body to store fat, particularly around the abdomen, as an energy reserve for the perceived threat it believes is ongoing. At the same time, it triggers cravings for high-calorie, high-sugar foods — because the body is trying to rapidly replenish the energy it thinks it needs. Cortisol also promotes the breakdown of muscle tissue for fuel, which slows metabolism over time.

The result is a body that holds onto belly fat stubbornly, resists weight loss efforts, loses muscle tone, and craves the very foods that perpetuate the cycle. If you have ever done everything right with your diet and exercise and still struggled to shift weight around your midsection, chronic cortisol elevation may be a significant piece of the puzzle.

Cortisol, Blood Sugar, and Inflammation — The Triangle Nobody Talks About

Here is where it gets particularly important from a metabolic health perspective: cortisol directly raises blood sugar.

When cortisol is released, it signals the liver to release stored glucose into the bloodstream — providing quick energy for the perceived threat. In a true emergency, this is useful. But when cortisol is chronically elevated, this means blood sugar is being pushed upward repeatedly throughout the day — even in the absence of any food intake. The result is blood sugar dysregulation that has nothing to do with what you ate, and everything to do with the stress load your body is carrying.

Chronically elevated blood sugar drives insulin resistance. Insulin resistance drives inflammation. Inflammation drives more cortisol production. And around the loop it goes — a self-perpetuating cycle that affects energy, weight, brain function, mood, skin, and long-term health in ways that compound over time.

This is precisely why understanding your blood sugar patterns is so revealing — because a CGM doesn’t just show you the impact of food. It shows you the impact of stress. Many of my clients are genuinely surprised to watch their blood sugar rise during a stressful meeting or a difficult conversation, with no food involved at all.

What Chronic Cortisol Elevation Depletes

Beyond its direct effects, chronically elevated cortisol depletes several nutrients that your body desperately needs to function well — creating a compounding nutritional deficit that makes everything harder.

Chronic stress depletes magnesium — one of the body’s primary calming minerals and a critical player in over 400 biochemical reactions. It depletes B vitamins, particularly the methylated forms essential for nervous system function and mood regulation. It depletes vitamin D, whose role in immune function and mood resilience becomes even more critical under stress. And it places enormous demands on cellular energy production, accelerating the natural decline of CoQ10.

In other words, the more stressed you are, the more depleted your nutritional reserves become — and the less equipped your body is to handle the next stressor. This is why nutritional support is not optional when it comes to managing cortisol. It is foundational.

Lifestyle Strategies That Make a Real Difference

Before we talk about supplements, I want to acknowledge something important: no supplement can outwork a lifestyle that is chronically driving cortisol through the roof. The foundation always comes first.

Sleep is non-negotiable. It is during deep, restorative sleep that the body clears cortisol, repairs cellular damage, and resets the stress response for the next day. Consistently poor sleep is one of the most powerful drivers of cortisol dysregulation — and one of the most impactful things you can address.

Movement matters — but the type of movement matters too. Gentle, consistent activity like daily walking is one of the most effective cortisol-lowering tools available. Intense exercise has its place, but when cortisol is already chronically elevated, too much high-intensity training can compound the problem rather than relieve it.

Connection and relationships are genuinely therapeutic. Meaningful social connection activates the parasympathetic nervous system — the rest-and-digest counterpart to fight-or-flight — and is one of the most underutilized stress management tools we have.

Time in nature, breathwork, moments of genuine rest and stillness — these are not luxuries. They are biological necessities for a nervous system that has been running too hot for too long.

The Supplement That Changed the Conversation for My Clients

Now let’s talk about one of the most powerful and underutilized tools in the cortisol conversation: adaptogens.

Adaptogens are a class of herbs that help the body adapt to stress — literally. They work by modulating the stress response, helping to buffer the cortisol spike without suppressing it entirely, supporting the adrenal glands, and promoting a state of calm alertness rather than wired exhaustion.

The adaptogen I reach for first — and the one I recommend most enthusiastically to my clients — is Rhodiola Rosea. Rhodiola is one of the most well-researched adaptogens available, with a long history of use for stress resilience, mental clarity, fatigue reduction, and mood support. It works particularly well taken in the morning, when cortisol naturally peaks, to take the edge off that morning cortisol spike and support a steadier, calmer foundation for the day.

The results I have seen in clients who add Rhodiola to their morning routine have been genuinely impressive. More steady energy throughout the day. Better mental clarity and focus. A greater sense of calm without sedation. Improved resilience to the inevitable stressors that arise. For many people it is one of those supplements where the difference is noticeable relatively quickly — and once they feel it, they don’t want to go without it.

The formula I trust and recommend is Rhodiola Rosea by Pure Encapsulations — a professional-grade, rigorously tested product from one of the most respected supplement brands in the industry. Pure Encapsulations is known for clean, hypoallergenic formulations with no unnecessary fillers or additives, and their Rhodiola Rosea is the standard I recommend with confidence.

Building a Complete Foundation for Cortisol and Inflammation Support

Rhodiola is a powerful starting point — but the most comprehensive support for chronic cortisol elevation and inflammation comes from addressing the nutritional depletions that stress creates alongside it.

I have recently introduced several supplements in this space that work beautifully together as a complete foundation:

Magnesium — the body’s master calming mineral, depleted by chronic stress and essential for nervous system regulation and sleep.

BActiv by Xymogen — a methylated B complex that supports nervous system resilience and mood regulation, particularly important for those whose genetics make B vitamin processing a challenge.

Nordic CoQ10 Ubiquinol by Nordic Naturals — supporting cellular energy production that chronic stress and cortisol deplete over time.

Liposomal Vitamin D3 + K2 by Quicksilver Scientific — foundational immune and mood support that becomes even more critical under chronic stress.

I have created a dedicated Cortisol Reset Collection in my Fullscript dispensary that brings all of these together in one place — including the Rhodiola Rosea by Pure Encapsulations — so you can explore them easily and order with confidence knowing these are products I have personally vetted and recommend to my clients.

The Blood Sugar Connection — And What It Reveals

Because cortisol directly raises blood sugar — independently of food — understanding your blood sugar patterns is one of the most revealing windows into how your stress load is actually affecting your body. A continuous glucose monitor doesn’t just show you the impact of what you eat. It shows you the real-time impact of stress, sleep deprivation, and cortisol on your metabolic health.

This is exactly what my 30 Days to Blood Sugar Clarity program is designed to reveal. In 30 days of wearing a CGM, with weekly coaching calls and weekly educational support from me, you will see your body’s response to everything — food, movement, sleep, and yes, stress — in real time. For many people it is the first time they truly understand what their body is doing beneath the surface, and it changes everything.
