The Gift I Never Saw Coming: How Healing Often Begins with Taking Charge

by Susanne  - October 10, 2025

Sometimes, life brings unexpected gifts—the kind that stop you in your tracks and make you feel like the world just tilted in a new direction. That’s how I felt when I began to experience improvements in my vision—something I hadn’t dared to hope for, let alone pursue. You see, I wasn’t looking for a cure. I had fully accepted that being blind was my portion in life, and I’d spent decades doing everything I could to live well with it.

Losing my sight didn’t happen all at once. It was a gradual process that came in unpredictable waves—one day I’d be able to see something, and the next it would vanish. For years, this felt like falling off an emotional cliff again and again. But for the last 25 years, I’ve lived with profound vision loss. And instead of fighting it, I focused on building a vibrant life within it.

What I discovered is that living with a major disability requires a deep reservoir of energy—mental, physical, and spiritual. That’s why taking care of my health became non-negotiable. I realized that when I nourished my body, I was also feeding the resilience I needed to thrive.

As I learned more about the Standard American Diet (SAD) and the overwhelming influence of Big Food and Big Pharma, I became aware that what most of us call “normal” is anything but. I began cutting out the processed, toxic foods so commonly accepted in our culture, and I committed to a cleaner, more intentional way of eating. Over time, my energy improved, my body felt better than it did 30 years ago, and I began to truly feel what “optimal health” could mean.

Then I heard about Dr. Walter Campbell.
I wasn’t looking for him—his work found me. Dr. Campbell is doing groundbreaking holistic work helping people with conditions like cognitive decline, autism, and even vision loss. When I learned about his clinic in Lauderhill, Florida, I knew I had to go. His approach is non-invasive, holistic, and unlike anything else I’ve encountered. And the results were jaw-dropping.

Within days of beginning treatment, I started to see things I hadn’t seen in years—like the artwork in my hotel room or the post to scan my building entry card. Each day brought another small miracle. The improvement was consistent, tangible, and deeply emotional. I now believe that the foundation of health I had built over the years made it possible for my body to respond so positively.

One of the core principles of Dr. Campbell’s work is detoxification—cleansing the body of the many toxins we unknowingly carry. Since World War II, over 80,000 synthetic chemicals have been introduced into our environment. Some of them are useful in our modern lives, yes—but they also burden our bodies in ways we’re only beginning to understand.

Take seed oils, for example.
When Crisco was introduced in 1911, it was hailed as a miracle product. I still remember my mother proudly using it in her pies. But now we know that seed oils like cottonseed, soybean, corn, canola, and sunflower are highly inflammatory and damaging to our cells. They’re used in virtually every processed food because they’re cheap and shelf-stable—but they wreak havoc on our health. These oils may even contribute to microvascular issues, including those in the eyes, which could play a role in vision deterioration.

What’s worse is the decades-long campaign against saturated fats, which falsely labeled animal-based fats like butter and tallow as harmful. In reality, these are the fats our ancestors thrived on. Our DNA hasn’t changed—but our diets certainly have. It’s no wonder chronic illness is at an all-time high.

If you want to take one step today to improve your health, stop using seed oils. Replace them with grass-fed butter, coconut oil, ghee, olive oil, or tallow. Just that one shift can reduce inflammation and support cellular healing. And start reading labels—almost every processed food contains these harmful oils.

So where does that leave us?
It leaves us with hope. Hope that by taking personal responsibility for our health, we can avoid chronic illness and even unlock surprising healing potential—just as I experienced. If you’re dealing with a major health challenge, know this: the work you do today to support your body—through food, movement, detox, and self-care—matters more than you know.

Dr. Campbell’s work gave me a gift I wasn’t even looking for. But I was ready to receive it because I had already been doing the work. That’s what I want for everyone reading this—to be so well-nourished, so grounded in vitality, that healing has a place to land.
